Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The Legacy of Devin Brown

by Zach Hoss

January 19, 2012

Throughout life we've all heard the old saying "actions speak louder than words." On January 12, seventh grader Devin Brown put this saying to excellent use. He has reminded everyone through actions that thinking of others before yourself can pay off in the long run. To say the least, Brown has redefined good sportsmanship.

While the NCJH Eagles were playing defense against Grinnell last Thursday a fellow Grinnell teammate passed the ball to Ty Schultz, a student with Down Syndrome. The basketball went past Schultz and landed in the hands of Brown. Instead of passing the ball to another Eagle, Brown instinctively handed the ball to Schultz, who shot and made two points for Grinnell.

To say the least, Devin has taught everyone a valuable lesson. An athlete can make a difference on the basketball court, but a mindful person like himself will sacrifice the opportunity to score more points to make a difference in someone's life.
