LETRS Certification

May 15, 2025

In order to boost reading scores, the state of Kansas requires all elementary reading teachers and middle school English teachers to successfully complete the "Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling"  (LETRS) program that "enhances a teacher's understanding of the science of reading and how to teach reading and spelling effectively". This is a two-year commitment that requires online classwork, textbook studies, eight in-person workshops, and passing (80%) two unit comprehension exams.  In order to understand the time commitment, there are 8 units.  Each unit had multiple sections (upwards of 10 sections) with reading in the textbook (at minimum one hour to complete) and online videos and activities (at least another hour completion time).  Each in-person workshop, lead by Southwest Plains Service Center, reviews the material and presents strategies for implementation in the classroom--all in six hours.  Which means each one of these teachers put in an additional 70-160 hours--all on their personal time--outside of school hours!

Congratulations to these seven elementary teachers!  Your dedication is appreciated!
