April 25, 2024

April 20th four Ness City Power Lifting athletes made the early morning journey to Claflin to compete for a state championship.  Power Lifting consists of 3 lifts:  bench, squat, and clean.  The “weight” of those lifts are added together for the “overall” category.  Monica Jordan, Angela Lopez-Barrera, Ben Durham, and Broxton Gall brought home 9 medals!

As a 2nd year power lifter, Ben “really enjoyed the day, however it was a long, tiring one.  We had a track meet at South Gray (Friday the day before) and I only got a couple hours of sleep.  However, I had a good track meet.  Our 4 x 800 got 1st, our medley relay brought home 3rd, and the 4 x 400 also got 3rd.”

Being a senior, Monica is glad that she participated in power lifting.  “It really helped me with other sports, especially track.”  Like Ben, her day was "also very tiring.  We got home from track at 12:30 am and to bed around 1:00.  I was up just a couple of hours later to leave for Claflin.”  Her advice to others is simple, “don’t stress about the weight category.  Don’t try to cut weight to be in a lower weight class.  Listen to your body and just train, train, train.”
